Canadian, b. England,
(1911–2011)
Born in England, Leonard Brooks' family emigrated to Canada in 1913, when he was just two years old. During the Second World War, he was an Official War Artist with the Royal Canadian Navy and documented the daily lives of Canadian sailors, as well as the aftermath of the bombing in London. He created 113 works in the space of two years. In 1947, he moved with his wife Reva to Mexico, where he stayed for the rest of his life. They created an informal artists' colony in San Miguel de Allende which remains a draw for artists, musicians and writers. Brooks worked in oils, acrylics, water colours, casein, duco, polymer, wax, and graphic mediums. Under his direction, a number of his collages were turned into tapestries. He was the author of eight books about painting. Also accomplished with the violin, he headed the music department at the Bellas Artes in San Miguel and inspired an annual chamber music festival which attracts musicians and music lovers from around the world.
