William Nichol Cresswell was one of the pioneering artists in the Huron Tract-Georgian Bay, Lake Huron district. He emigrated to Canada from England in 1848 and settled to a life of fishing and painting. He was living in Seaforth, Ontario in 1880. In 1863, Cresswell began teaching a young Robert Ford Gagen (1847-1926). In 1876, George A. Reid (1860-1947), then 16 years old, was his pupil. He is also said to have been a great influence on Horatio Walker (1858-1938). Cresswell was an inaugural member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, established in 1880.
