George Eitel
painter
Canadian,
(1906–1961)
Born in Preston (now Cambridge), Ontario, George Eitel was employed by Dominion Electrohome Industries Ltd. in Kitchener for 25 years and was recognized as one of Canada's leading industrial designers. As a painter, he was primarily self-taught though he studied briefly with both Henri Masson (Canadian, b. Belgium 1907-1996) and Carl Schaefer (Canadian, 1903-1995) at Queen’s University in Kingston. Eitel's watercolours focused mainly on the landscape and architecture of the Region of Waterloo. Over time, his style gradually shifted from representational to include elements of impressionism and abstraction. His innovations and experiments in watercolour gained the attention of many leading Canadian galleries. Eitel's work has been collected by such institutions as the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), Winnipeg Art Gallery (MB) and the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal (QC).
