A co-founder of The Funk Ceramic Movement of the San Francisco Bay Area, Gilhooly earned a BA in 1965 and an MA in 1967, from University of California, Berkeley. He taught at the Univerisity of Saskatchewan, Regina (1969-1971) and at York University in Toronto (1971-1977) and was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Gilhooly returned to California in 1982 and moved to Oregon in 1995.
