Kaka Ashoona
sculptor
Canadian-Inuit, (1928–1996)
Kaka Ashoona was an early member and life-long supporter of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative, Ltd. in Kinngait, Nunavut (Cape Dorset). Born into a family of talented artists, he was the son of the renowned graphic artist Pitseolak Ashoona and the brother of acclaimed artist Kiawak Ashoona. Quarrying his own serpentine stone and carving exclusively with hand tools, Ashoona's work was highly polished and featured intricate depictions of animals and people inspired by the traditions of his heritage. His three children are each also accomplished artists in their own rights.
