Dorothea Ashton
painter, printmaker, sculptor
Canadian,
(1910–1990)
As a student at the Ontario College of Art (OCAD U) Dorothea Ashton met and studied with several members of the Group of Seven. She learned to paint in oil, watercolour and pastels. Over the course of her career, she also studied interior design, architecture, printmaking and sculpture. When her interest turned to sculpting in metal, she turned some heads when she attended a three-year course in welding - the only woman in the class.
Dorothea had moved to North Bay, Ontario, after graduating from OCAD U. While there, she organised travelling art exhibitions for northern communities that otherwise wouldn't have had such opportunities, and ran art classes. In 1942, she met and married her husband Ralph. The couple moved to Kitchener in 1947 where they both joined the Kitchener-Waterloo Society of Artists (KWSA) and soon immersed themselves in the local community. They were tireless advocates for the arts. Dorothea was an art teacher and active in the Five Counties Teachers' Council in 1954 to 1955. She and her husband became instrumental in the founding of the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery (KWAG) and Dorothea became the first president of KWAG's Women's Committe in 1957.
