(1926–2015)
Ted Harrison demonstrated early aptitude. At the age of two, his father - a coal miner and amateur artist - gave him pencil and paper and encouraged him to draw. At the age of 17, in 1943, he attended Hartlepool College of Art and took training to teach. This was interrupted a year later by the Second World War but he returned to his studies after his military service and earned a Diploma in Design, in 1950. Over the course of a lifetime, Harrison travelled extensively: Mumbai, India in 1946, next Egypt, then Kenya. He was an art teacher in Malaysia and in New Zealand (for 3 years) where he was influenced by Maori art. He moved to Canada in 1967: first to Wabasca, Alberta and eventually to Carcross, Yukon, where he stayed for the next 25 years, still teaching. The Artist retired from teaching to paint full time in 1981. In 1986, he designed the Yukon Pavilion for Expo 86 (Vancouver). Harrison moved to Victoria, British Columbia, in 1993. During his career, Harrison was awarded 4 honourary Doctorates, awarded the Order of Canada in 1987, and the Order of British Columbia in 2008. He became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2004.
