Ralph Ashton
painter
Canadian,
(1912–1991)
Born in Bowmanville, Ontario, Ralph Ashton studied art in England and earned his way through the Ontario College of Art (OCAD U) in Toronto by working evenings in advertising. He completed his four-year degree in just two years. He and his wife, Dorothea (also an artist), moved to Kitchener in 1947 where they both joined the Kitchener-Waterloo Society of Artists (KWSA). Ralph set up his own studio and taught art three mornings a week at Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate & Vocational School (KCI). In addition to his interest in the visual arts, he was very much involved in the local theatre scene with the acting, writing and producing of plays, leading a joint career in art and theatre.
The Royal Canadian Academy of Art first accepted one of his oil paintings in 1951. From 1958 to 1960, Ralph Ashton served as the second Curator of the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery (KWAG was newly established in 1956). His work was exhibited by the Art Gallery of Toronto (AGO, Toronto, ON), the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and the McMaster Museum of Art (Hamilton, ON), to name a few.
