Barry McCarthy completed an honours BA at the University of Guelph in 1975. After attending Teacher's College at Western University in 1976, he became Art instructor at Waterloo Collegiate Institute, Waterloo, from 1976 to 2006. Since retirement, he works full time as an artist.
