Jack Bechtel
muralist, painter
Canadian, (1923–1966)
As a teenager, Kitchener native Jack Bechtel joined members of the Kitchener-Waterloo Society of Artists on their sketching trips throughout Waterloo County. He went on to graduate from the Ontario College of Art (OCAD U). His paintings were included in exhibits sponsored by the Ontario Society of Artists and the Royal College of Art, as well as in numerous exhibits throughout Ontario and Québec. Bechtel taught summer classes at the Doon School of Fine Arts (formerly located in what is now the Homer Watson House & Gallery) from 1950 to 1964. His dedication to his teaching and encouragement of young artists gained him wide respect and a devoted following. The rural areas of Waterloo County were the subjects of his earlier realist paintings. In his later years he became well known for creating murals and abstract art. The Kitchener Public Library commissioned him to create "Enlightenment", a striking mural still on view inside the Central Library branch on Queen Street North. Bechtel completed it after six months of night work in 1962.
