Born in the Free City of Danzig (modern day Gdańsk, Poland), Otto Beyer attended the University of Danzig where he majored in architecture and painting. He worked as an architect before emigrating to Kitchener-Waterloo in 1972 at the age of 49. Having arrived in his new home, he furthered his education and graduated with a Philosophy and Fine Arts degree from Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) in Waterloo, Ontario, and went on to become a lecturer there. He taught Form Theory at WLU for five years until his retirement in 1985. Inspired by architecture, Beyer drew from his experience and training in his practice. He wrote: “Many of my pictures are related to architecture. I always felt at home in the closed sphere of the old town where I grew up. Gables, steep roofs and sturdy, dark towers became elements of my life and my work.” His art also demonstrates principles of early Modernism found in the work of such artists as Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. Beyers' oil paintings, watercolours, lino-cuts and etchings depict a simplicity and clarity of pictorial form.
