A native of Kitchener, John Schlachter studied art with F.H. Varley (Canadian, b. He became well-known as a landscape painter and as an inspirational teacher. Schlachter joined both the Kitchener-Waterloo Society of Artists and The Teachers' Council of the Five Counties Art Association. A proponent of art education and the encouragement of art appreciation, he was on the 1956 Steering Committee and a Founding Board Member of the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery (KWAG), where he served for eighteen years. In KWAG's early years he also acted as Conservator, responsible for the care of the Permanent Collection; and Preparator, assisting with framing and installation for the exhibitions. Schlachter's work has been exhibited by the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the London Art Gallery (now Museum London, ON), the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto) and the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal (QC).
