Roland Strasser
drawing, painter
Austrian, (1895–1974)
Roland Strasser received early training from his father, the well-known painter and sculptor Arthur Strasser (1854-1927). He studied at Vienna's Academy of Fine Arts (specialist in drawing, painting, sculpture). As a young man, barely out of his teens, he was attached to the Austrian army as a war artist during World War One, on the Eastern Front. In the course of a lifetime, Strasser travelled widely in Asia. He spent two years (1920-22) in Indonesia, Sumatra, Java, Bali and the interior of New Guinea (which was then unknown to Europeans). In two more journeys in the mid- to late 1920s, he travelled to Tibet, China, Mongolia and Japan. He and his wife eventually settled in Bali in 1930 where they remained for 10 years until the political situation in the aftermath of World War Two caused them to move to Australia, for five years, and finally to the USA. Strasser continued to live and work in Santa Monica, California until his death.
