Bill Brandt's career as a photographer began in Vienna in 1928. In 1930, he moved to Paris where he assisted Man Ray (1890-1976). By 1933, he had moved to London, UK where he would document every level of British society. Such documentation was unusual at the time and his work formed an important social commentary. He became particulaly well known for his portraiture and landscapes and became Britain's most influential and internationally admired photographer of the 20th century.
